Is it time for some more FAKE comics? I feel it is.

The options are as numerous as there are artists/bands to choose from, but it works best when there's an associated theme or mascot, as there is with Overkill.

The skull with wings creature made its first appearance on album number three, titled Under the Influence (1988), which, incidentally, was the first Overkill album that I ever owned and is largely responsible for the love of that decade's Thrash music that I still have today.

Named Chaly, the skull-bat has been the cover star of most of their subsequent studio albums. At time of writing that's a 'holy-shit-impressive' nineteen more - and that's not counting Live stuff, EPs, or Compilations, which would add another nine or ten to the tally. 

Overkill are prolific and, with very few exceptions, are still producing albums that put their peers to shame - newcomers and old duffers alike. Yes, that absolutely includes Metallica and Megadeth. [1]

Ten Commandments - Millennial Redux

The Ten Commandments appear in three different versions in the Bible, in Deuteronomy 5:6–21 and twice in Exodus, namely 20:2–17 and the 'Ritual Decalogue' of 34:11–26.

Different editions of the book may use different words or more archaic grammar, but in current times they're generally accepted to be as they're written below (in grey).

I wondered what a simplified, modern interpretation of each one might be, because the times demand it (those ones are in orange). It's for fun, so don't get your subligaculums in a twist over it. Satire is good. Tyranny is bad. Don't confuse them.

I'd a lot of fun creating the Manowar Comics (Mockups), so started thinking about what other bands from my record collection would fit the format just as well.

Voivod wasn't my first choice (they were the second), but they were certainly the best one. Quite often the songs are stories in themselves, or part of a larger concept/mythology that's expansive and intriguing. The bands iconography, 'out-there' lyrics and concepts could make for an excellent and unique comic book read.

Covers would, of course, be by Voivod's drummer Away, but if he's too busy with making music to devote to interior art, then perhaps someone like Ian Miller or Dean Ormston would work, both of whom I feel could bring something unique but complementary to the table. 

The images that I found on the internet weren't as high res as the Manowar ones were. Some were full of awful JPEG artifacts, so I went for an 'independent comic, fanzine' approach, leaving some errors and 'jaggies' in place. The result was only partially successful, but it could've been worse. There's a few more below the cut.

Some Truth (Betwixt the Lies)

Many moons ago, in a Kingdom United, October's end was a seasonal occasion duly respected by the nature-loving folk who dwelled there. But all things change, sooner or later, and during a night of storms and knives a wicked hunger was born in the hearts of some men, which quickly spread.

The Kingdom's protectors were unwilling or unable to stop the capitalist greed that slowly consumed the once-good people.

In time, the cruel equation that ensures the rich get richer and the poor become poorer was added to a child's primary education.

Generations later, behind closed doors, handpicked scientists, doctors, and surgeons began working on a method to have it coded directly into the DNA of newborns. But it wasn't necessary, because the children copied what their parents did: as they grew, they looked around and deemed what they had to be of lesser economic value to what they felt their peers had, so they embraced the government approved ideology with great zeal, as if it were mandate.

Manowar Comics - FAKE

I’ve been mulling over just how good a Manowar comic book could be. Besides questing for the Crown and Ring it could have Eric and Joey discussing the merits of a wet sword. And there could be a regular Grandfather's Story Time section at the back, like how Alan Moore adds additional world-building with Watchmen and TLoEG.

The comic itself would have to be printed on parchment and held together with staples made from the recycled chains of pleasure slaves. It's good for the environment.

It would be required practice to read it in the tones of Orson Welles, preferably by the light from the north star when winter skies are grey, or, if it's cloudy in England, with a few black candles - but not the supermarket kind whose melt pool smells like a mix of lard and soot.

Decades later it could be re-drawn by older hands and issued with a cover that has Roman Numerals added. But it wouldn't be as good. Most folks would read it only once and then shelve it, preferring the original and best version - in fact, let's call the original printing the only one worth its salt. The past glories endure while the new fads fade.

Until it happens, until the warriors' pleasures are eternally inked, coloured + lettered, I'll settle for some homemade mock-ups using existing official art. There's a few more below the cut.
