Various: TV Pilots + First Episodes

There are many TV Series from yesteryear that I'd like to check out — either for the first time, or from a more experienced, adult perspective — but for various reasons don't have time to do so.

TV Pilots / First Episodes can help decide what to prioritise, so I'm taking that route. I typically get more joy from 70s + 80s TV than I do from modern stuff, so I'm starting there. Call it an 'age thing' if you want. I'm Generation X. Rather than let those encounters go to waste or be forgotten in the years to come, I've chosen to record some of them here. In the order watched:

ABANDONED POST: Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)

When the news broke that a new Masters of the Universe animated series was on the way, I was intrigued. When it emerged that it wasn't another 'fashionable' reboot, but a direct continuation of the original Filmation 1980s He-Man and the MotU television series, I was genuinely taken aback.

But then I learned it was a Netflix series being overseen by Kevin Smith, so I adjusted expectations accordingly; i.e., I feared the absolute worst. I've not liked Smith's film work and have mixed feelings about his comic work, which tends to be mostly drivel with one or two really great scenes in each issue, at best.

Even though Smith didn't write all of the episodes alone, the new MotU is much the same - mostly drivel with a single great scene in each one. And like the previous Netflix animated series that I watched, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, it's only half a story.

ABANDONED POST: The Sandman (2022)

I've often thought that if Sandman were to be adapted for the screen, then it'd work best as animation; having now watched the live action version, my feelings on that haven't changed.

All responses to the series that I've read thus far have been positive and complimentary. That isn't surprising, in today's world, but I felt it was almost as shit as every other Netflix Original Series that I've tried to watch over the years.

I've covered the original TPBs briefly on The 7th and Last. A number of significant changes and additions were made in the live action series, but generally it adapts the first two TPBs, namely Volume I: Preludes and Nocturnes (1991) and Volume II: The Doll's House (1991).

Of course, if reading doesn't appeal to you and you enjoy (or can tolerate) modern filmmaking techniques, then maybe you'll feel differently. I certainly seem to be in the minority this time.

I was unable to find existing cover art of acceptable size and quality for the SG-1 posts that I made on The 7th and Last blog, so I hastily made my own. They're uninspired, but they did what I needed them to do. Maybe they'll be of some use to someone; e.g., folder images (cropped to a square), or placeholders until something better can be found or created, etc, by the one in need.

If they can serve a non-profit purpose for you, use them however you wish. I don't own them. I simply modified and repurposed an existing image that I found on the internet. When you get right down to it, can anyone ever really 'own' something that's been posted on the internet?

You can throw a painted pebble into a pool of water but can't claim ownership of the ripples that occur (or the pebble, for that matter). One can only hope that folks who repost stuff don't be an asshole and use them for inappropriate means. But as always, let your conscience be your guide.

I've no plans to cover the individual seasons of Voyager on The 7th and Last blog, but because I did the TV 'Movies' for both The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, I wanted to finish that timeline. There are twelve VOY two-parters in all and once again this post will be longer than the usual length. For the record, I won't ever be doing the same for Enterprise or Discovery.
