Masters of the Universe Knock-offs (c.1984)

MotU Knock-offs (c.1984)

The only MotU knock-offs I ever owned. I don't know the names of the characters or toy line. It's probably something derivative, like Monarchs of the Universe, or Masters of the Cosmos, etc.

Deep | Mlehst ‎/ Split Tape (1996)

Deep | Mlehst ‎/ Split Tape (1996)

The term 'tape-trading' acquired negative connotations due to the volume of (mostly crap-sounding) bootleg live recordings that made the rounds that way, but it was a perfectly viable method for small or independent labels and/or unsigned bands and artists to distribute demos and limited-run releases to interested parties.

It was through such channels that I bought Split Tape in '96. Only 333 official copies exist, but you can find it from time to time on places like Discogs or eBay.

Both artists play a kind of ambient/electronica with an industrial and experimental vibe. 01. The Deep track(s) in particular are a fine example of a hypnotic exchange given the time to grow from an idea into an all-encompassing mood, occasionally reminiscent of Tribes of Neurot. 02. Mlehst is noisier, less rhythmic, with two bass guitars, a drum machine, loops and samples.

I ripped the cassette to digital files many years ago for use in my mp3 player. You can find a DL link for both below the cut. [1]

Mr T

Mr T

I know Mr T from only four things: Clubber Lang in Rocky III (1982); B.A. Baracus in The A-Team TV Series; and as himself in a motivational exercise video and a TV snack bar advert. I've not followed his career, nor am I aware of any scandals or wrongdoings that he may have been involved in (if any such things exist). My respect for Mr T is derived from either the characters he played and/or what they represented. That's what earns him a page all of his own.

M.A.S.K: Fingerprint and Code Kit (1985?)

M.A.S.K: Fingerprint and Code Kit (1985?)

The Mobile Armored Strike Kommand: FaCK was a licenced product by Pic Toys Ltd in the UK. I don't know if it was available in other territories; there's very little information about it on the web. My info comes from having been given it at Xmas as a child sometime in the mid-1980s.

ABANDONED POST: Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)

MotU: Revelation (2021)
Dirs. Adam Conarroe / Patrick Stannard | Episodes: 5, approx 25 mins each.

When the news broke that a new Masters of the Universe animated series was on the way, I was intrigued. When it emerged that it wasn't another 'fashionable' reboot, but a direct continuation of the original Filmation 1980s He-Man and the MotU television series, I was genuinely taken aback.

But then I learned it was a Netflix series being overseen by Kevin Smith, so I adjusted expectations accordingly; i.e., I feared the absolute worst. I've not liked Smith's film work and have mixed feelings about his comic work, which tends to be mostly drivel with one or two really great scenes in each issue, at best.

Even though Smith didn't write all of the episodes alone, the new MotU is much the same - mostly drivel with a single great scene in each one. And like the previous Netflix animated series that I watched, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, it's only half a story.

MotU: Golden Books: Super Adventure Book
Soft Cover Editions (1983-86)
Author(s): Various | Illustrator(s): various | Page Count: ???

Most of what I know about the Masters of the Universe: Golden Books publications was learned from a Vaults of Grayskull page, which is also where the majority of the images used in this post were obtained, so all credit to the folks there for what's presented here. If seeing the covers collected on a blog is of interest to you, too, then proceed below the cut:
