Overkill Comics - FAKE

Is it time for some more FAKE comics? I feel it is.

The options are as numerous as there are artists/bands to choose from, but it works best when there's an associated theme or mascot, as there is with Overkill.

The skull with wings creature made its first appearance on album number three, titled Under the Influence (1988), which, incidentally, was the first Overkill album that I ever owned and is largely responsible for the love of that decade's Thrash music that I still have today.

Named Chaly, the skull-bat has been the cover star of most of their subsequent studio albums. At time of writing that's a 'holy-shit-impressive' nineteen more - and that's not counting Live stuff, EPs, or Compilations, which would add another nine or ten to the tally. 

Overkill are prolific and, with very few exceptions, are still producing albums that put their peers to shame - newcomers and old duffers alike. Yes, that absolutely includes Metallica and Megadeth. [1]

The six images above are by artist Ozan Korkut, created for Ithaki Publications' Turkish language editions of Frank Herbert's original Dune novels. It's likely that I'll eventually find time to include the final retail versions in each book's respective Book Covers post, but I found some 'clean' ones with no text or logos, which I figured would make an interesting separate post. The images above are just a thumbnail. You can find larger versions of each one below the cut. They're not a high enough resolution for printing, but they're decent enough for a crappy Blogger web page.

The DUNE Font (2023)

Ghost[s] in the Shell: Versions (1991—)

There's a lot of Ghost in the Shell content out there. But if you're new to the franchise, what order would you tackle them in? Can you skip any? Would you want to? If I was to gather up all that I own and offer it to a friend who had yet to experience anything GitS related, to avoid too much confusion I'd suggest that he/she approach them in the following order. Do the Amityville movies deserve a post? Absolutely not, they're mostly rubbish, horror shite, cliché, garbage, but I did it anyhow because they were already written (for a previous blog), which meant most of the work was simply copy/paste. It's Friday. It's pissing rain outside. And I wanted an easy post.

01. The Amityville Horror (1979), Dir. Stuart Rosenberg, which was reportedly based on true events, is the first of many not-very-good entries in the haunted house franchise.

Newly-weds Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) and a long-lost Gibb brother (James Brolin) occupy 112 Ocean Avenue, a house in which a vicious murder spree once occurred. Before long, their happy life develops a homicidal slant.

The 1995 Judge Dredd movie may have had some of the worst casting of any Hollywood junk that year, but not everything about the venture was terrible. Some of the production art was pretty darn good. I know because a book from the same era gave an insight into what might have been.

If you look through the contents page of both this blog and my main one, The 7th and Last, you'll notice that I really like Frank Herbert's DUNE. Over the years I've read all six of the original novels multiple times.

Beyond the printed page, I've watched the David Lynch film so much that I could probably replay the entire movie in my head with a fair level of accuracy. And I've even watched the TV Miniseries about half a dozen times. Then there's the many video games, soundtracks, and previous comic book adaptations, all of which vary greatly in their relatedness and believability.

What I've not watched is the film version made by Legendary Pictures in 2021, for various reasons, none of which will add much to this review. The reason I mention it at all is because the comic book in question is an adaptation of it, not of Frank Herbert's original novel.

The film's fans claim it's very faithful to the source, so I figured I'd be in familiar territory, at least. Nevertheless, it means I'm writing about an adaptation of a film that I've not seen, which is a rarity for me. But I'll give it a try.

Ten Commandments - Millennial Redux

The Ten Commandments appear in three different versions in the Bible, in Deuteronomy 5:6–21 and twice in Exodus, namely 20:2–17 and the 'Ritual Decalogue' of 34:11–26.

Different editions of the book may use different words or more archaic grammar, but in current times they're generally accepted to be as they're written below (in grey).

I wondered what a simplified, modern interpretation of each one might be, because the times demand it (those ones are in orange). It's for fun, so don't get your subligaculums in a twist over it. Satire is good. Tyranny is bad. Don't confuse them.
